Screening Notes-Screening is NOT diagnostic and should not be considered the equivalent of a medical examination. Your child should have well check-ups with his/her pediatrician as he/she deems necessary.

Vision: K-2nd Grade: A score of 20/40, 20/30, or 20/20 in either eye is considered in normal range.
4th Grade and Up: A score of 20/30, or 20/20 in either eye is considered in normal range.
*Nearsighted – A person sees near objects clearly, while objects in the distance are blurred.
*Farsighted – A person sees far objects clearly, while having difficulty seeing objects that are nearby.

Hearing: To pass a hearing screening, a student must hear at 20db at levels of 1000Hz, 2000Hz as screened by appointed trained personnel (nurse/etc) using a portable audiometer. If the student fails the first screening he/she will be re-screened at least 2-3 weeks later to rule out allergies/colds. If student fails again a note will be sent home that the parent may want to share the information with their child’s physician.

Blood Pressure: High blood pressure can be an indicator of serious health issues. Blood pressure can usually be controlled with diet and exercise. High blood pressure should always be monitored by a doctor. Blood pressure classifications in children and adolescents are determined by comparing their blood pressure readings to their height. Blood pressure readings below the 90% are in the normal range. Blood pressure reading between the 90% and 95% are considered high normal. Blood pressure readings that exceed the 95% are classified as high blood pressure or hypertension.

Body Mass Index (BMI): The height/weight/age method of obtaining BMI is a general test. A BMI above the 85% percentile or below the 5th percentile may place a child at health risk; and parents should seek further assessment by a health care professional. BMI’s above the 85th percentile may lead to chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol levels. Weight can be controlled with reductions of soda and sugary foods, as well as increased exercise.

Scoliosis (6th grade only): A spinal condition that often develops during childhood or adolescence. A Spine with scoliosis will curve to the left of right. Scoliosis curves often look like the letter “S” of “C” and they primarily affect the thoracic (middle) of lumbar (low back) regions. If scoliosis is suspected, a simple x-ray of the spine can confirm if an abnormal curve is present.
